DELAND, Fla. –  That all Baltimore connection on the first touchdown of Sunday’s Spiral Tropical Bowl wasn’t scripted. Really.

But Tom Flacco smiled when asked about his role in the bit of good gridiron news from the Charm City after leading the National team to a 35-7 victory over the American team in the 5th Annual All Star Game at Spec Martin’s stadium

The Towson quarterback threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, starting the day with a 25-yarder to Morgan State’s Manasseh Bailey on the National team’s opening possession.

“We played against each other last year in the Battle of Baltimore,” Flacco said. “We talked a lot during the week [of practice] and got to know him.  It was awesome to see him open and get him the ball.”

The younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback finished 11 of 18 for 173 yards to pace the National team’s 334-182 advantage in total yards.

“We competed,” Flacco said. “I’d like to have a couple throws back, but that’s going to happen when you’re installing new things quick and aren’t 100 percent sure what to do. We did things good things as a team and you can’t ask for anything more as a quarterback.”

Dan Chisena of Penn State caught a 69-yarder from Flacco in the fourth quarter and a 55-yarder from Tulane’s Justin McMillan (7 of 10 for 93 yards) in the second as the National team took a 21-0 halftime lead on Flacco’s eight-yard run with 1:04 remaining in the first half. Chisena finished five catches for 155 yards.

Saif Kahn of Clarion scored the National team’s other touchdown on a 10-yard fumble return in the third quarter.

Jaylon Henderson of Boise State registered the American team’s only touchdown on a 12-yard quarterback keeper after leading a 16-play, 75-yard drive. He finished 10 of 17 for 87 yards.

Dre Brown of Illinois led the National team with 31 yards on seven carries while Walter Fletcher of Ball State gained a team-high 37 yards on nine carries for the American team. Craig Rucker (23 yards) of Mars Hill and Jake Bofshever (12) of Long Island each had three catches for the National team.

The game completed a week of practices and opportunity for the players to showcase their skills for 20 NFL and CFL scouts. Seventy-one players from last year’s game signed with the NFL and CFL, most notably Samford’s Devlin Hodges, who started at quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
